Mom's RumRill Vase, Table runner, Hydrangeas and My Abstract Watercolour by photographerpainterprintmaker

Yesterday we cleaned up the front garden. My hydrangea bush had some incredible blooms on it this year. It was a joy to bring these inside. I found a lovely spot for them in my office. The background is a section of my abstract watercolour/rice paper collage which measures 40 3/4″ x 49 3/4″.

When I was a child we had two very large lilac bushes in our backyard. Every spring I would cut lilacs from these bushes and bring them in for my mother. She would go to the china cabinet and pull out this vase to hold them. Little did I know that this piece of American pottery was anything special. It is Red Wing RumRill art deco pottery with the number 629 on the base. The crochet table runner was made by my mother.

This was one of my final BFA pieces. My classmates, I’m sure, didn’t appreciate having to hop over this painting every day in order to get to their studio’s. I had to lay it on the floor with fans drying the large pools of watercolour. This process would take hours.

I love it because it was one of those pieces that I pushed beyond the breaking point and brought back. I thought it was trash, but my professor Adele Duck made me work it to death, or should I say back to life. I think I learned more on this one failed painting than in all my other works combined. Thank you Adele!

I photographed this in natural light. It’s a bit grainy because it is a cloudy day.

Reflection overload! Fruit en Plein Air by photographerpainterprintmaker
Reflection overload! Fruit en Plein Air, a photo by photographerpainterprintmaker on Flickr.

Spring has sprung, but the colours are just not out yet. So Margaret and I opted to bring some colour outside and paint fruit on a cake plate on the glass patio table. Reflection overload!

Day 14 "Gunna Buy 5 Copies for my Mother", originally uploaded by photographerpainterprintmaker.

It’s not the Rolling Stone’s magazine cover, but if my work did grace the cover of a magazine I’d definitely buy at least 5 copies. Day 15’s assignment was to design a magazine cover. So, this is what I came up with, with the help of an application called fd’s Flickr Toys. It was fun.

My Perfect Saturday!, originally uploaded by photographerpainterprintmaker.

Donna posed a question for us for day 5 of the 21 day journal challenge. What would be my perfect Saturday? Well that’s a no brainer for me. Don my hat, grab my paints and head out to commune with nature and capture the country side.

I really wanted to depict my plein air painting, I was just trying to think of how to manage it. Then it hit me! My hat has become part of me, so much so that it’s almost a joke. Like I can’t paint without my lucky hat. I got the hat at the San Diego Zoo when I was out visiting my Aunt Janet, and my Cousin Julie. I keep adding things to it. First it was the feathers from my first trip to the Michigan Renaissance Festival. I love my feathers! Then people started giving me pins, so I keep adding them to the hat as well. I just wish the pins had longer shanks most of them won’t stay on. 😦

So, my favorite thing to do on a Saturday would be to go Plein Air painting. But, not alone I have to have all the gang, or at least one friend along with me.

Every week three of us get together for a visit at my friends studio. This was my sketch from January 20, 2011. Margret’s dog decided my lap was where she belonged. You can see Angel’s and my reflection in the middle of the teapot.

Roberta’s Roses, originally uploaded by photographerpainterprintmaker.

Back in the summer you may remember that four of us went up north to a small town named Wilberforce, Ontario to attend a Plein Air event called Brush with the Highlands. We stayed a quaint old motel called the Bostonian. It was perfect for our needs. The proprietor, Roberta, is loved by many, and we soon found out why. While we were there a family needed a place for an out of town relative who was there for a funeral. Roberta opened her arms and gave a room to these people gratis. She received this lovely bouquet of roses as a thank you. The story does not end there. Last year Roberta had a fire. The townspeople of Wilberforce got together and helped her rebuild her motel. So not only is Roberta a gem, but the towns folk are as well.

Margaret and I spent a few hours painting this beautiful vase of flowers en Plein Air. We set up the scene on the picnic table in front of the motel, and enjoyed the northern afternoon sun.

Just a quick update on my crazy life.

We are out Plein Air Painting again and boy does it feel great! Monday was our second outing. It was windy, and cool but we stayed out for two hours then retreated to Margaret’s studio. Once there I set up a still life, and this was my view. Margaret painted the bouquet on my right, and Mary painted it from across the table. It was a great day.

Real pitcher / Imaginary Room, originally uploaded by photographerpainterprintmaker.

I’m not content to watch television, it bores me. So, I was watching it the other night, something I rarely do when I spied a small creamer in the hutch beside the TV. I pulled it out and got my sketch pad out of my purse. It started as just a wee sketch of the pitcher and its shadow, and developed into an imaginary room.

Afterward, I sketched this quick imaginary forest, which I painted at a later date when I took my nephew to a doctor appointment. I’m never without my sketch book and paint anymore thanks to an idea I got here on Flicker. I will post a link in my blog to the group.
